When it comes to wedding photography there is no one style fits all approach. Each photographer has their own unique methods for capturing beautiful moments throughout the day and telling your clients story. It’s important for couples to find a photographer that has a style that they love and that reflects their personality. Once they do, it’s then important to book quickly as wedding photographers are often booked up to 2 years in advance.
Candid/Photojournalistic - Capture the day as it unfolds, allowing for candid and natural photos to be taken. This includes capturing guest reactions, capturing moments of the couple laughing and smiling and capturing the beauty of details that can be missed.
Posed Portraits - When posed photos are taken, it’s essential that each photo is well lit with the use of natural and/or off camera flash lighting. This can include things like a reflector or a flash on a bracket or even an off camera flash that is synced to the camera. It’s also a good idea to use apps like Sun Seeker that help with finding great light for outdoor shots.
Indoor/Outdoor - Whether your shooting indoor or outdoors it’s important to plan out each shot carefully in advance and make sure you have all the equipment needed for your client’s needs. For example, if you’re shooting outdoors, it’s a good idea to scout the area in advance and look for the best backdrops.
Getting a mix of wide, medium and tight shots is also key. The more angles that you have, the better story you can tell.
Portraits - Depending on your clients preferences, you can shoot both classic and creative portraits of the groom and groomsmen. For example, if you’re taking the groomsmen to a hotel room for their portraits, try different angles and take a few tight shots for a stronger sense of storytelling. You can also incorporate creative off-camera flash shots and silhouettes for more fun.
Group Shots - When it comes to group shots, it’s essential that you have all the members of the wedding party present. You should discuss with your clients the list of guests and designate some special guests who may want priority photos. This way, you can ensure that these guests are included in the shots and that you have a nice mix of people in each picture.
Hidden Moments - Hidden moments are those that aren’t always seen, but can add a lot to the story of the wedding day. It’s the little things that can be overlooked, like kids playing in the background, people whispering about a special memory, or friends laughing from the corner of the room. It’s those unexpected moments that are what makes a wedding so magical.
